What is Cogmed Working Memory Training?

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a computer-based solution for improving attention by increasing working memory capacity over a five-week training period.

Through combining cognitive neuroscience with innovative computer game design and close professional support, Cogmed can deliver substantial and lasting benefits to its users:

  • Aims to improve attention by increasing working memory capacity
  • An online, coach-supported, training program
  • Can be completed in around five weeks in school, home or work environments
  • For children and adults alike
  • Based on solid research

What is working memory?

Working memory is the cognitive function responsible for keeping information ‘alive’ in our minds, manipulating it, and using it in our thinking (typically for a few seconds). It is necessary for staying focused on a task, blocking out distractions, and keeping us updated and aware about what’s going on around us.

Our working memory helps us better meet the challenges we face in everyday living. We use our working memory constantly in daily life, helping us to perform efficiently and effectively in academic, professional, and social settings.

Research shows that deficits in working memory are related to poor academic and professional performance. Conversely, strong working memory capacity is closely correlated with fluid intelligence.

How does Cogmed Working Memory Training work?

The Cogmed software is built around three easy-to-use and age-specific online applications, each designed to motivate and reward the user for training.

The programs guide the client through multiple rotating exercises each day.

The programs automatically adjust the complexity level of the exercises in real-time to a level that is challenging but not so difficult that it becomes intimidating. It adapts to whoever is using it.

The programs have been clinically proven to increase working memory capacity.

8 out of 10 users who complete training show measurable effects; working memory capacity is increased, leading to better ability to focus, follow instructions, and stay on task.

What are the effects of Cogmed training?

Cogmed training can improve attention, concentration, focus, impulse control, social skills, and complex reasoning skills by substantially and lastingly improving working memory capacity. The goal is improved performance and attentional stamina.

Do the results last?

Yes, research and experience show that the effects of Cogmed Training last after training. The reason is that once working memory capacity increases, we naturally continue to use it at its new level, which serves as constant maintenance training.

What is involved in the training?

This depends on the package you choose.

Essentials package (Package A) includes:

Initial interview: A phone conversation or face-to-face meeting with the Cogmed Qualified Coach to discuss the training and to decide if the individual is a suitable candidate for the training.

Start-up session: The Cogmed trainee (and a parent Training Supporter if the user is a child) meets with the Cogmed Coach (in person or virtually) to learn about working memory and practice using the software. A pre-training assessment of the current functioning of memory and attention is carried out. The start-up session also includes structuring the training with the user.

Access to the programme: An individual licence for the trainee which allows access to the Cogmed training programme for 25 sessions (5 weeks).

A certificate of completion is issued when you finish the programme.

How much does it cost?

The cost of this Essentials package (Package A) is £150. This programme is suitable for those older students and adults who are confident that they have sufficient motivation and skill to complete the programme without any further support. It especially appeals to those who are familiar with the programme, perhaps have done it in the past and would like to do it again.

Success Package (Package B) includes:

As for Package A, but including:

  • A weekly 15 minute coaching session
  • Regular remote monitoring of progress
  • Personalised feedback to optimise progress and get maximum value from the programme’s features
