Who is it for?
Cogmed Working Memory Training has been developed to assist people who experience problems with working memory and attention, as typically found in ADHD and/or working memory deficits.
Did you know?
Working memory problems often present as difficulties with:
- Focus and concentration
- Impulse control
- Reading comprehension
- Maths reasoning
- Problem solving
- Sequencing steps in a task
- Transitioning between tasks
- Planning, organizing and structuring their daily activities
What is Cogmed Working Memory Training?
Cogmed Working Memory Training is a computer-based solution for improving attention by increasing working memory capacity over a five week training period.
Through combining cognitive neuroscience with innovative computer game design and close professional support, Cogmed can deliver substantial and lasting benefits to its users:
- Aims to improve attention by increasing working memory capacity
- An online, coach-supported training program
- Can be completed in around five weeks in school, home or work environments
- For children and adults alike
- Based on solid research
What is working memory?
Working memory is the cognitive function responsible for keeping information ‘alive’ in our minds, manipulating it, and using it in our thinking (typically for a few seconds). It is necessary for staying focused on a task, blocking out distractions, and keeping us updated and aware about what’s going on around us.
Our working memory helps us better meet the challenges we face in everyday living. We use our working memory constantly in daily life, helping us to perform efficiently and effectively in academic, professional, and social settings.
Research shows that deficits in working memory are related to poor academic and professional performance. Conversely, strong working memory capacity is closely correlated with fluid intelligence.
How does Cogmed Working Memory Training work?
The Cogmed software is built around three easy-to-use and age-specific online applications, each designed to motivate and reward the user for training.
The programs guide the client through multiple rotating exercises each day.
The programs automatically adjust the complexity level of the exercises in real-time to a level that is challenging but not so difficult that it becomes intimidating. It adapts to whoever is using it.
The programs have been clinically proven to increase working memory capacity.
8 out of 10 users who complete training show measurable effects; working memory capacity is increased, leading to better ability to focus, follow instructions, and stay on task.
What are the effects of Cogmed training?
Cogmed training improves attention, concentration, focus, impulse control, social skills, and complex reasoning skills by substantially and lastingly improving working memory capacity. The goal is improved performance and attentional stamina.
Do the results last?
Yes, research and experience show that the effects of Cogmed Training last after training. The reason is that once working memory capacity increases, we naturally continue to use it at its new level, which serves as constant maintenance training.
What is involved in the training?
Initial interview: A phone conversation or face-to-face meeting with a Cogmed Qualified Coach to discuss the training and to decide if the individual is a suitable candidate for the training.
Start-up session: The Cogmed trainee (and a parent Training Supporter if the user is a child) meets with the Cogmed Coach to learn about working memory and practice using the software. A pre-training assessment of the current functioning of memory and attention is carried out. The start-up session also includes structuring the training with the user.
Five-week at-home training: The Cogmed training takes place at home or school, 30 to 45 minutes per day, five days each week, for five weeks. If training sessions are missed due to illness or other complications, the training can be extended beyond the 5 weeks.
Five weekly telephone coaching sessions: The Cogmed Coach will contact the Trainee and Training Supporter each week during the five-week training period. This coaching session is a time to report progress, to problem-solve any difficulties, and to assure progress toward completion of training. The charts and statistics which record the Trainee’s day-to-day performance will help us to monitor their progress.
Closure meeting: Following the training, you will have a face-to-face or telephone interview with the Coach. At this session a post-training assessment will be completed to help measure progress and a summary progress report will be prepared.
Six months follow-up interview: Following training, we will send you a final set of questionnaires to complete and return to us. Improvement in memory and attention often continue to increase following the training period. These questionnaires give us a further opportunity to measure and document your progress.
What is the cost of Cogmed Working Memory Training?
The cost includes the entire training, payable at the time of the start-up session. It covers the start-up session, 25 at-home training sessions, weekly telephone or face-to-face coaching, a follow-up interview and post-training report. Please call for more information about prices.
